SPARK!

One of the projects I’ve worked on that I am most proud of and that I think best represents student-drive learning is the SPARK! Hackathon. Zach Minster, the 9-12 CS Coordinator at St. Anne's-Belfield School and I started the annual SPARK! Hackathon in 2016 as a way to share the enthusiasm we have found in students who discover computer science & coding with the thriving tech community in Charlottesville. What we discovered during the planning and running of the event is that students are eager for opportunities to collaborate with others and work on meaningful projects while the tech community is eager to hear their ideas and help them create.

In 2018, we took all of our CS outreach efforts (Hackathon, Summer Camp and CS Institute) and brought them all under the umbrella of the SPARK! CS Program.
The goal of SPARK! is to make computer science accessible to all in Charlottesville and beyond!
